Bought an MES 40 8/22, 10/23 the control panel stopped working. Contacted Masterbuilt support, they no longer carried the part, suggested 3rd party supplier, installed new panel and in the middle of my first smoke this year it just shut off. When I powered it back up it read GIPX on the screen and I can get the temp to adjust but the timer will not set. Before coming to this forum I ordered another control panel figuring that would be cheaper than another smoker. Well, same issue with new panel, and Masterbuilt is no help, tried to get support and it seems that if you are out of warrenty they have no interest in providing support. Outside of going the auber route I've read about on here any advice? It seems that I have something going on outside of the control panel that is causing issue with the panel malfunctioning, or I have two bad panels? Thanks it's the MB20074719

I have no idea in regard to aftermarket parts, but the way I see it is this; you have three choices. 1: spend time and money trying to fix it 2: The auber route which I would consider budget permitting. 3: Tannerite and a high speed round.

But seriously... it's an easy fix with the auber, and once setup it is a very flexible tool as a smoker. Food for thought.

Hi there and welcome!

I'm not much help with that error code. I couldn't find anything online except a couple of hits on people with the same issue.

I would think it's time to do the simple rewire and go with an Auber PID controller.

Now it may suck to think "I will be spending $160 on a controller and that's almost as much as buying a new unit", BUT that is actually not what is happening.
When you rewire and spend that money for the Auber (and hopefully replace 4 cheap crappy wire connectors so they don't rot away if they haven't already rotted away), you will be getting a "new" smoker that is 50x better than anything Masterbuilt makes brand new.
Also it will perform better than electric smokers that cost more than $1k!!!!

I always say that it is like turning a golf cart into a Ferrari, so for that price you get an amazing smoker you can keep running through anything short of a tornado hitting it!

I wish I had a fix for your current situation but feel free to ask all about the conversion to a PID controller and feel free to come over to the greener grass that all us PID electric smoker guys enjoy :D

If you want to stick with the stock controller I'd look here with your model number otherwise the PID route is an excellent and better functional option.

Thanks for the input, I believe I will go the PID route. Any specific links to doing the mod? Going to begin my research.

My wiring is very similar to kbarnes12's post factory controller bypassed. It seems that all he did was essentially connect the red and black. All other wiring suggestions also included white to blue? So what happens if you don't connect white to blue?

Here is a simple rewire guide for the MES that should help

In short you got black smooth to a braided and then white smooth to the other braided wire. The rewire guide will help you identify the wires :D
