Any Idea why my smoker would be heating when off. The digital display is dark and the heating indicator is not lit.

Need more info:
If it's just for a short time (up to about 15 minutes or more in the Summer) right after you shut it off, it's all the heated items inside the smoker (Metal walls, racks, element, etc, etc) giving off their stored heat, raising the temp of the air inside the smoker.
If that's what it is, it would even do it if you unplugged it.

No I used it Saturday & turned it off.
Last night my sister in law said it felt hot when she walked by. i went out and looked at it. None of the display was lit up and the "heating" LED was not lit either however when I turned it on it said it was 280 F inside.

I think it is time for a call to Masterbuilt. 280 is pretty much at the top of the scale so it sounds like it was on full blast. Controller failure? In the meantime, unplug it (which I am sure you have already done).

#1. Unplug your MES whenever it's not in use.
#2 Get a set of wireless digital therms, like Maverick ET-732, or similar.

280° is obviously not from the sun, but was it actually on & 280° in the smoker, or was it off & the Sun had it up to 110°, and your MES Therm thought it was 280°.

At least next time open the door & see if the area below, where the element is was real hot.
If it actually was 280°, the bottom right of the outside of the MES would be real hot too---Much hotter than the Sun could ever get it.

Yeeep I'd call up MES. Sounds like the opposite of hte problem I had <Mine wasn't heating>

But never store it plugged in. That is a hazard. Also it's hard on the equipment..and some times the LED panel just doesn't work. <Having taken mine apart, and put it back together, my LED panel isn't functional half the time> so I'd check the remote control unit <if it has one> to see if it got turned on that way.

Exactly:
When I got a Gen #2 to test for Masterbuilt, I went out & plugged it in, while I cleaned the glass. I didn't turn it on yet, but I closed the door & proceeded to fill & light my AMNPS. Then I turned around & noticed my MES was already at 190°, but I still hadn't turned it on. I gave it a sharp blow just to the left of the control panel, and it went off. I got a new control panel for it.
Good reason to never leave it plugged in.

I can tell you this Pat..be prepared for some bleeding knuckles trying to put new parts in. LOL

Sounds like a new Stephen King movie in the making.

Sounds like the relay is stuck in a closed circuit. Bottom circuit board issue.
