I was slicing some Sirloin to make Pho. That dang slicer you have to flip meat almost ever cut or gets a big flab of meat on it. Was close to the end and somehow stuck my thumb in the blade. Ouch. Took nice piece of meat. Ended up having to stick it in some old powder for dog nails a couple times. Why did i not just use knife! Time to wear glove in the future. Wont even touch a mandolin without one. Still have couple chuck roast to grind but not today!

I did a number on my thumb a while back while cleaning my slicer. Cut through the nail like it was butter and right to the bone. Ordered cut proof gloves the next day

You weren't using the pusher thing? My old $100 slicer trails off too with meat, but I took it to a tool and blade sharpening place along with a few other special knives to have them sharpened. It sliced pastrami pretty good after that. Don't know how long that edge will stay though. Something tells me a crust of pepper, etc. is not great for knives. I think they ship the harry homeowner ones purposely not razor sharp to make it idiot proof...I mean...well you know...:emoji_anguished:

Most of us have been there. Hell, I crushed my hand in a 130 ton press brake. Happened in an instant. Came off the pedal just in time to keep my fingers from falling behind the brake. I was lucky the fingers were just crushed/broken!

The mandolin gives me the heebie-jeebies ever since I took the side of my thumb off with it. I will use it for scalloped potatoes but I give it great respect. I wince and look away watching a cooking show when the chefs use it without the guard. I've been traumatized!

Dang, lucky it was not worse. Totally agree on a Mandolin, both my wife and I have taken chunks. Cut resistant gloves are a simple investment that can save thousands in ER bills!

Takes a brave person to fess up to that embarrassing a blunder
Hope it heals with no problems.

Friend of mine's girlfriend got a finger in the business end of the food processor. Only nipped the tip under the nail. Finger sore, but the cabbage did not survive so no cole slaw that night.

Been there done that!! I wear cut proof gloves for the slicer and mandolin. Glad the pho was good anyway!

OUCH!!!!
Brian, I won't even look at my slicer, or Mandolin without my chain maul gloves.
Although, I do want to try these for a little more dexterity.
Both blades are razor sharp, like you, I learned the hard way.

Good call on the septic powder, we always have it around as well.
(My wife gets it from work).

Ouch! I've cut myself so many times over the years it's a wonder I even have fingers. Now I just go slow and avoid my cheap mandolin... that hasn't got me yet and played right it never will.

I haven't had issues with either the slicer or mandolin yet, but never even think to put them on. I do wear them if I'm cutting a bunch of meat with knife.

I have done that before, took the whole tip of my finger off and man did that hurt.
