Making grates

So gunna be making grates for my new fridge smoker wonder what everyone uses
Looking at using expanded metal but what thickness are we using out there found some #9 from grainger

You may need to strengthen the gates a bit with other metal. I've used 1/2" angle to make perimeter and flat across the middle section.

Got my materials getting ready to start building the grates do you guys leave as bare metal or put a coating of some kind on after
