I am looking at upgrading my smoker, I’d like to stay under $1,000, but I found a 2015 Mak 2 Star General for sale locally for $1,500. Its the older heat diffuser design but I don’t know that much about them because they have always been outside of my scope. Can you give any advice on the value of the older model? Otherwise I would probably be looking at a Grilla or Rec Tec 590. I don’t mind paying a little more if the value is there.

Believe brand new they ran $2,600-2,700. Nothing wrong with that diffuser design. It works just fine. Find out if the igniter is the original or has been upgraded to the newer flashfire. If its the original and by that I also mean it's the actual one that came when it was new, then it's due to be replaced. With the same type will only cost $30-45 but I would offer him $200 less and then go purchase the flashfire. It's significantly better! MAK is about as good as it gets when it comes to pellet smokers. If the smoker has been taken care of (you can tell with a visual inspection) it's worth going for.

I would agree with schlots on this 100%. If I could spare the cash would have bought a MAK 2 star. But I love my Rec Tec Bull with no regrets. MAK is known to be one of the best pellet grills - from what I read.
