Okay so I was given this bag of "lump" Mesquite.

Decided to open it up this afternoon and do a test burn in my Mini-WSM. I was quite surprised when I opened the bag and found the lump to be more like logs!

I like big fires and all, but that's a tad big for the Mini! Further down in the bag it appears there's smaller stuff.

Is this typical of "lump". Most I've bought here in the past is smaller and more consistent in size. I'm not a big mesquite fan so I probably will use this in moderation anyways.

Yeah-I've had a couple of bags like that. Some lump charcoal producers do a poor job of filtering out the large stuff.  I've just used a 5 lb. maul and broke them down into smaller pieces just so they would fit the firebox.

Good to know! I a test burn just to see how it would work. Lit a half a chimney full and dumped it in the mini-wsm. Had 4 hours of 225*-250*. once it got going the mesquite wasn't as harsh as when it started. I may use it form next beef smoke.

i had the big log problem with cowboy brand. i sent them an email and told them my problem. they said it is now being made in mexico. they sent me a check for the price of the bag.

That's what my El Diablo lump looks like here in the southwest- large and dense chunks, as Dutch states just take a whammer and smack it-the stuff burns long and hot.

I wish I could find some other lump besides mesquite. I'll have to look around some more once "BBQ Season" kicks back in. I guess not everyone grills and smokes year round like I do...

Interesting - I never saw that method. I like the way that uses the smaller drum filled & upside down inside the larger drum. Put junk wood around the smaller one till the larger drum is filled & the smaller one is covered. light it & once it gets going you don't have to mess with it till it's done.

  • Yeah I have looked at that method too, The bad thing is I moved back into town and can't do burns like that anymore unless I head out into the desert!

Yup, making your own coal you need understanding or no neighbors at all. I use to make it with the drum in a drum method and would yield some good lump that way, it was really cool at night when the gasses were burning off-a lot of different colors flaring outta the exhaust vents. Was always great to do on a July Arizona day. (not)
