Have been waiting for my wife to decide it was time to put our beloved Queenie to sleep. Ernestina has decided it is time to let her go. Queenie, an Australian Cattle Dog, is just about 14 years old. A few years back a blood test revealed her pancreas was going. We put her on a supplement. About 5-6 months ago she swallowed the Pill Pocket but spit the pill out. Tried everything we could to get her to take it but she simply wouldn't. She has become very weak...and,is nothing but skim and bones. Queenie still eats everything we put in front of her. She eats a full can of food plus a full tube of Beneficial daily...in addition to a few treats...handfuls of cereal, chunks of toast..which is why Ernestina has been holding on to hope. She told me earlier today that she was going to call the vet...was surprised when she did. This is so heartbreaking....seems like only yesterday we were driving her home from the ranch we got her from...she spent the entire 20 minutes sitting on Ernies head as we drove home...

Sorry to hear, any chance of getting a new pet? I know it's not the same but it can help.

Hey Ink...  It's difficult losing a long time friend...   Been there....  Very painful to say the least...

Sorry to hear this--so sad.  I don't think any decision in life is harder than this one.  Just make sure you keep telling Ernestina that she made the right decision.  There comes a point when there's no quality of life left for the dog, when there's no true joy in living, when to not do it is simply selfishness.

As you know, we've been down that road.

I'll be thinking of you guys on Tuesday.

I'm sorry to hear that you have to make this decision but know that it must be time.

We have 4 other dogs. This will be the first time in my adult life that I will not have a Cattle Dog. For whatever the reason I love the breed. Time will tell about getting another pup. I have been somewhat mentally prepared for Queenie leaving us....not that this is going to help on Tuesday.
We become so attached. You would think after going thru this a half dozen times it would hurt less but...
Queenie was a real hell raiser when she was young. My Ex had bought this ugly ass couch...that I got to keep. Ernie came along and just goofed on me relentlessly about it. We got Queenie when she was 7 weeks old. She must have been about 3 months old...she was hauling ass thru the house and grabbed the skirt on the bottom of the couch....and removed it in one quick pull...without even breaking stride. I had ano open box of 00 battery cable. I was standing by it and noticed that it was getting pulled thru the doggy door. I grabbed ahold of it to stop it...Queenie stuck her head out the door, looking around. Turned my back and she managed to pull all 50' of it into the house...really going to miss Momma...

Will be reading "A Dogs Purpose" here shortly.
This is the very reason why I got a parrot years ago...RaRa, an African Grey, will be turning 22 this year. Bit of luck we will be able to grow old together. And if he does outlive us I feel sorry for Desiree, our kid...well, my step daughter...RaRa, and his side kick Cheeto, another Grey...have got an absolutely horrendous vocabulary. RaRa is a male, Cheeto a female. We were hoping that they would Bond and breed but no luck so far.

Sorry to be late but let me wish you the best memories of a long time friend. The only thing worse than losing a friend is not having known their company in the first place.

No matter how hard I try to convince myself that we are doing the right thing this is not getting an easier. When we fed everyone breakfast I was crying while "standing guard" over Queenie. One of our hounds gulps her food and is like a vulture waiting to swoop in. Was very heartbreaking watching out little girl eat her last meal. Even having the other 4 things will be awfully quiet here later today.

I truly feel sorry for the folks that say "it is just a dog". They are so much more than that....all you have to do is open your heart to them.

A terrible situation to be in. Very sorry for you and Ernestina. Had to let my 14 year old baby go last year...JJ

So very sorry for you and your family's loss.

They are never just a dog or just an animal.

They are a part of your family.

I feel sorry for anyone who has never known that.

Sorry for you and your family things like this in life is never easy but we have to adjust. This is like losing a family member and as said people who have never lost a close pet have no idea what it is like. Me and my Ms. have been through this many times and it seems it gets harder each time. Although it may seem cold at this time but when we can do this there is no farther suffering sorry we can't do this for some other people family members who spent there last days even months and some years suffering. So what I'm saying is be thankful for your time with her and as always you have her memories for comfort. When the time is right there will be another and when it does something you will say remeber when Queenie did that see she will always be in memories. Our hearts weep for you and yours.
