Hey guys, my wife and I have been kicking around the idea of raising trout for some time now. Our plan has been to do aquaponics, where the trout water feeds the plants and the plants feed the fish. it may not be a six figure career but I'm sick of working a job I really don't like. I love cooking and smoking food, so I figured why not make some money doing it. I would also like to smoke the fish and sell locally. I have a basic idea of how our greenhouse would be layed out but haven't put anything on paper yet. Neither of us really know of the challenges we might face such as permits or certifications needed and don't really know where to start looking to find all the info we need. Any thoughts or advice is appreciated.

Although I have no idea about that subject, I admire the spunk you and your wife have to go down this road. Good Luck, and welcome to to The SMF! Hopefully someone will chime in with some good advice.

I am not sure what part of the country you live in, but you might want to research county ordinances and maybe the state as well. They all may consider this a commercial fishery. Ditto with the selling of smoked fish. There maybe a bunch of regulations you would need to contend with as well. See if anyone in your area is doing something similar and seek their advice. Sounds like a lot fun.

I didn't realize trout were vegetarian thought they lived on bugs and other fish?

Check with your local fish and game department. I'm not even sure it legal as a home business. In Vt. I believe you need a special permit just to have a native fish in an aquarium.

I wrote that wrong. The plants give the fish good water. I would definitely have to give them feed. Thanks for the responses guys! I will look into other types of fish. It's just in my are everyone goes crazy for smoked trout.

You really should add your location,it helps us to help you

I have to say I am curious how this will work..

But before you sink time and money into a set up, definitely check local laws before proceeding ahead. You might need to consider a different species of fish as people said. Fortunately, with proper feed, fish like Tillapia actually aren't tasteless junk.

We do have some trout farmers in Wisconsin I'm not sure of the regulations. But there is a guy about an hour from home that is growing shrimp in a pole shed for about three-year's or so. North country shrimp in warehouser WI. I know that he raise them in swimming pools.
Do your research on regulations and check with USDA'S farm service agency there might be funding available for your project.
Good luck and follow your dreams
