New guy from Kansas City here. We have a place in Montana and plan to retire there in a handful of years. Have been using a GMC Davey Crockett up there for the last two years. Brought it home and sold it. Looking to upgrade.

We are in bear country so the grill has to come into the garage after it cools down. We don't have a concrete drive so grill has to be rolled across gravel/dirt. We had the DC on a Costco horizontal dolly cart and it worked fine but bending over to cook was a pain.

The trailblazer looks like a great grill but I don't think I would trust it with the legs extended. Weather can go from very calm to extreme wind with no warning. I think even a full size grill might get blown over.

Looking at keeping the Trailblazer legs folded and put it on a cart like this:

I would consider a larger grill if I could figure out a cart with big wheels that would roll easy on gravel and a big enough wheelbase to be stable in heavy wind.

Another plus with the Trailblazer is it could travel in the future if we start fifth wheeling in retirement.

Would any of you Trailblazer owners trust it not to tip over in heavy wind? Can anyone tell me the height from the ground to the grates when it's folded up?

Thanks.

I would recommend the Grilla Grill Silverback. Get the competition cart upgrade and throw a bag of sand on the base when it looks like the wind is going to pick up. It's a grill with great reviews and a company that stands behind their product. It has an insulated bottom, which will really help up in colder Montana. You should check it out.

Yeah the Silverback looks great with the comp cart. Quite a bit more money though. And no doubt I would have to add the Rec Tec Wifi controller to the Silverback. I did that on my Cabellas grill and it works great. Wifi on a grill is like a heated steering wheel on a car. Once you have it you can't go back.

Its agonizing trying to pick the best grill.

Thanks for the advice.

Anything with a competition cart. Grills, Rex tec, Yoder, etc all sell competition carts for theirs

Rec Tec doesn't sell one for the small grill and the comp carts they do have only have caster wheels.

I'm leaning towards making my own from a gardening cart. It will allow me to have storage, trashcan, a place to set platters and maybe allow me to have a wind break and/or insulation on the bottom and sides. It will look a little redneck but I don't even have a driveway or lawn.

Pretty sure I am going to get the RC Trailblazer and use one of these as my cart. The deck is 18" which will put my grate height at 34.5" with the grill folded up. I will probably affix a couple 4x4 posts across the width of the cart and set the grill on those. That will allow me to leave the rails on all sides and have the grill's controller just above the rail.

This setup will give me a lot of extra room for pellet bins, a trash can, accessories, etc. This cart should also give me a lot of options for insulating the smoker.

Do you know for sure the rectec controller will fit the silverbac?

You would have to make a raised enclosure for it to fit. I've only seen photos of the Silverbac but I believe the controller is taller rather than wider. For my Cabellas grill since the Rec Tec controller was smaller than the PID controller it came with I cut out a piece of Azek deck board scrap I had which allowed me to flush mount the Rec Tec controller. Worked out pretty well for me. My wife calls me a douche because I named the grill FrankenRec.

I've only seen one other post where a guy put the Rec Tec controller in a different grill. It was the small Traeger grill. I think that grill has a smaller auger and hopper so he was getting some errors at higher temps. Mine doesn't get any errors and holds temps perfect. My Cabelas grill came with a PID controller but it was kind of cumbersome. Plus no wifi or ability to calibrate grill and probes. I bought the Rec Tec RTD proble but it was way to big and no way to retrofit it cleanly. So i cut off the end of the RTD that came with the Cabelas and crimped on the proper connectors and it works perfect. The Rec Tec controller has no idea it's not controlling a Rec Tec grill.
