what are ya gonna do, we all have to die sometime. The exposure to the sun that my parents subjected me to as a toddler will certainly kill me faster than lead tainted deer meat. Plus I live in the chemical capital of the world...just prop me up and smoke some goodies for my family.

Well... been eating deer meat since i started eating solid food as an infant... 36 now... no noticeable lead effects... gonna keep shooting and eating deer... I do however shoot them with a pumkin ball (12 gauge slug) population here has grown so much over the years that all we are allowed....

I would be more concerned with all the ducks and geese eaten before the steel shot only regs were made... always a little shot left in them....

Upon thinking on this a bit, it would seem pretty easy to avoid the lead particles by doing what most normal folk do anyway. Or SHOULD do. Don't process the meat from around the wound channel. If lead particles got into the meat, it's gonna be bruised/bloodied, right? I mean for the most part.

What about all the small game. Most of these are shot with a shotgun and many of the shots stay inside the game.
Maybe we should outlaw the hollow point and ballastic tips.

Only Winchester power points allowed, or arrows.

I would rather bite down on a lead shot than a steel shot anyday. Ducks are out of my diet, steel shot to hard on the dentures.

I came upon two deer last fall that were suffering from a severe lead deficiency.....so, I obliged them and gave them a good dose. About 1oz. apiece.....now they are in my freezer in various forms......

We don't get to use Hi-power guns to hunt deer in Iowa......cept for 1 "special" season in the southern two tiers of counties where outdoor outfitters are snatching up land left and right, and the deer population is out of control because the outfitters only shoot "Big Bucks".......BLEAH!!.......I have yet to find a good recipe for deer antlers anyway....I'll take a nice big doe anyday!!

end of rant.

This article is crap, some dink looking for his 15 minutes of fame.
This quote from him says it all -

"As a physician, I nearly fell off my chair," he said. "I've been eating this all these years." (30 years by his admission)

Let's see.... He's still alive and coherent, able to write this inflamatory drivel, Hmmmmmmmm........................ must not be too bad.

Passing junk like this along just perpetuates it.

I've never had a problem with lead in my deer meat.

Also, when I clean a deer, I cut out around the wound, I do not use any meat that was torn by the shot.
I'd worry more about a deer that has had bones shattered....those shards of bone in the meat are not worth dealing with. (for me anyway

)

Interesting article though....I doubt that I stop hunting with my rifle.

I'll have to parrot what others are saying..

Scaremongering. Oh noes.! Lead in the meat, cell phones, microwaves, power lines. Oh noes.!

there are alot of interested parties out there who's main objective is to put out something that will get to a few people at least and change there veiws on say hunting or gun control... if junk like this changes the opinions of only a few gullible people then they have accomplished there goal. we have been shooting our game with lead for how many hundred years? not to mention the fact that in olden times the lead would be melted over the hearth and then poured into the molds for the ball, incidently the same hearth that was used for cooking and i have not seen any log cabins at any of the historical sites that have air exchangers in them so occuopant were also breathing any gases given off by this process. if every time you see this crap and there is a lot of it and each time it sways a few peoples opinions, i think you all know what little ground we have left to stand on reg gun control and hunting. vote in 2008 and pay attention to the background voting of the people who will be still in play.

Me too... that is crap.. Our primary feed is venison... If you know what you are doing it wouldnt be a prob. Any time a there is a question of fragmentation, ie .... Blown up shoulder or something.. that meat in the affected area is disposed of by our familly.

Lead is dangerous, but I think we are going overboard here... How many of you are from the era were lead paint was on most everything?? heck some might have even chewed on it, yet you are still here...

Sorry, them articles like that get me growling... what ever happend to people thinking for themselves and using common sense???

Just have to add my .02!

As an avid hunter, shooter and reloading enthusiast I have to say that the article referred to is pure bunk.

Proper game loads DO NOT infuse meat with lead particles. And anyone who processes meat, whether novice or professional, knows to clean out the wound channel and "jellied" meat. That is where one may, and I say MAY, find a few particles.

So, for what it is worth, venison and all other game meats are good for you! DO NOT let some liberal bunny hugging self important know nothing take all your fun away!

Cheers!
