So this time I kept the firebox tray, inverted the cook chamber tray and added fire bricks.
I moved the cook chamber inverted tray left and right looking for a sweet spot but ended up with a 1 inch gap at the firebox end.
First shows placement of probes, left device is lower cook grate, right is upper cook grate.
Back probes are nearest the firebox, white are furthest away.
Gold and blue probes are center left and right.
Next is firebox with bricks and starter fire, then temps as more fuel is added.
Last temp readings are with a way too large fire, just to see what happened.
I'm amazed at how close the three readings furthest away from the firebox stayed grouped together.
I tried a water pan next to the firebox opening but it didn't change much, as seen in the highest temp readings.
Next and last tests will be with a 2 foot smoke stack extension and then with and without the firebox tray removed but with bricks in both cases.
As the heat built up the upper cook grate ran hotter than the lower.
