Posted a thread in the general smoker build forum, wanted to post some pics in the reverse flow specific build forum. This is a Lang clone of a 48 model. Very similar CC and FB dimensions. The stack is longer than a Lang and the grates configured slightly different. I modeled the collapsible front shelf very similar to a Lang.

Attempted one test burn but results were not good as the weather had other plans. The work was done in Michigan at my In-laws shop. I ordered all of the material through a local Fab shop so they could laser cut some material for me and roll the cook chamber. I did all of the welding and designing of the smoker. My father-in-law is going to season it this weekend and perform another attempt of a test burn. Planning to cook on it next weekend for a party.

Let me know if you have questions!

Great looking build!

Thank you all for the kind words! I’ll be sure to post pics from the first cook next weekend. I’ll be coaching my father in law on doing the test burn this weekend. If he sends any pics, I’ll post those as well!

I can see you put a full flange on top of the cook door, that may be an improvement over a Lang, mine isn’t fully flanged like that.

The build looks awesome, I can’t wait to see it in action and hear a full after action report.

My father in law is firing it up tomorrow for me to do a test burn in the morning in Michigan. Next weekend I’m cooking three pork shoulders on it for a party and I’ll be sure to give a report on it in this thread.

My father in law did the first run on the clone. He only sent me snapchat pictures but he ended up making salmon. They dry brined it for the morning and then threw it on about 4 hours at 180-190 and glazed it with an apricot jam the last 30 minutes. He said it was quite windy there but was able to maintain the temperature just fine. At first he said the smoker varied about 70 degrees from each side, but I think that was early on before all the steel had a chance to thoroughly warm. Halfway through the cook I asked for a temp update and he said they were relatively close from side to side. He had a discrepancy with the thermometers that I will investigate when I get into town on Thursday evening. He said about 30 degrees different from a digital to the mechanical thermometer in the same spot, so I’m going to boil test both. Both he and the mother in law said the salmon was excellent. That’s saying something as the mother in law isn’t a huge fish fan

Had some down time today while my 2 year old napped so decided to get into my shop and make the oak slats that will rest on the bottom shelf of the smoker. 2 coats of poly have been applied to the top side with a 3rd coming up soon. I’ll start coating the bottoms tomorrow.

Damn, I'm impressed. I wouldn't even know where to start lol.
Thanks! I started with asking myself “What size smoker would I like to have for entertaining, yet not too big for cooking on at home”. I went with the Lang 48 as a guide. I just eyeballed/guessed on some items like the upper cooking grate height, how dare the fire box was insert into the cooking changer, etc... For the flow stuff, I used daveomak’s information in his tutorial.

Having access to the 3D modeling software is a plus, but I sketch everything out first. Then I model it to visualize it better.

That’s awesome sounds like all went well. When I fire up my Lang I let it sit a good 25-30 degrees higher than where I want to cook at so all the metal heats up. Then I let it come to temp after opening it up and adding the meat.

I’m looking forward to personally cooking on it this weekend. Father in law has never attempted to BBQ anything before so I’d say he had good first luck.
