KCBS is aware of the ongoing Cyclospora outbreak being investigated by public health officials. At this time, no changes have been made to KCBS garnish rules, as no produce item permitted under KCBS garnish rules has been specifically identified as the source of the outbreak, and no recalls have been issued involving approved garnish items.
We are closely monitoring guidance from the CDC, FDA, and state health authorities. If new information warrants changes to KCBS rules or recommendations, we will communicate those changes promptly.
As always, teams are encouraged to follow safe food handling practices and thoroughly wash any fresh produce used as garnish. Garnish remains optional under KCBS rules.
Contest Organizers are encouraged to monitor guidance issued by their local and state public health authorities and comply with any applicable requirements or mandates.
The KCBS Board of Directors has not considered this issue at this time. This guidance reflects the KCBS staff's assessment of the currently available public health information.
