Do y'all think this would work with a 55g drum. Not exactly reverse flow but indirect. What would be the drawbacks to this design? Possibly more flow to one side or the other?

That design will work well, you just have to have either two exhaust stacks or vents at each end of chamber so that you can control air flow,

Another option is to use two 55 gallon drums , one on top of the other, and put your connecting pipes at the end, leave about 2" gap between the drums, then no reverse flow/defuser plate will be needed.

Thanks for the reply. It seems like if I put 2 exhausts, one at each end, the smoke would just be able to flow directly from the sides of the defuser plate and out of the exhaust without flowing over the meat.

I like the idea of using 2 drums that way (even easier and cheaper lol) but would I be able to get enough heat without an excessive amount of fuel in the bottom drum?

They call these double barrel smokers, and they work very well. If you look around on line, you can find kits that include everything you need minus the two drums.

It is about the easiest way to build a smoker that actually will work and cook good food.

Check them out, this is at Northern Tool
