I was going to add this piece of Butcher Block Maple to the front of my Bandera for a shelf... more for looks than for using as an actual cutting board I might add.

So, if i'm not really going to cut on it, but I just might catch myself being tempted to on an occasion:

Q: What should I use to treat this with?? I have a lot of different products ranging from Watco products to 'Salad Bowl Finish' to Bartop finish, etc.
BUT, I just want a little input from you guys.... and the gals too.

I would recommend a Food Grade Mineral Oil, like you get in a drug store... Mineral Oil will not go rancid like vegetable oils. Do Not use anything with Petroleum in it...

I'd go with a salad bowl finish that meets government standards for
a nontoxic, food safe finish. Then wipe it down on occasion with a clorox and water wash.
years ago when I was young we made them and used veggie oil with no issuses, but I guess the oil will go ranside. I never saw it, but these were hard maple and didn't take a lot of oil...
good luck

Paul is right - and the best part is it is cheap - how are you going to insulate the wood from the door and the heat? The ones on my BBQ are fiber washers - didn't know they made them any more

Mineral Oil for wood cutting boards-and if outside re-treat it every couple 3 weeks, depending on your weather.

RGR that!!!

I was hoping the majority would go this way....

I was just going to hold it out away from the firebox on the bracket, but your right, heat will travel down that bracket, so I will prob search Lowes or Plumber's Supply
for some fiber washers...
