Join KCBS?

I'm pretty new to Smoking, but my buddy and I have put together a team (Dr. Squealgoods BBQ), and we'll be doing our 2nd comp. in October. The 1st was a backyard event, this one is an actual KCBS contest. This might be a dumb question, but : Do most teams join the KCBS? I can't figure out what you get out of it.
