Is this worth $50?

Looks like it might be a gen 2 , which is not good . Hard to see , but no vent in the top is a gen 2 .
Hey chopsaw, well I'm not familiar with electric smokers. So where does it vent on a gen 2?
Never mind, did some research, on the left side.

No Picture here either,
But If the top vent is on the left side wall, it is one of the Early Generation #2 units, which I have no use for.
In fact I have one in my garage that I used for under 6 hours (testing only), and I took the racks out & am saving the smoker for parts I might need for my Gen #2.5. If anybody wants a Gen #2 without racks, they can have it for FREE.

Pics were there yesterday . I didn't see a top vent .

Yup---That's why I say it has to be an Early Edition of the Gen #2.
They made the first run with the top vent at the top of the left side wall.
So they changed it to the top, back, left corner, which is the best place for the top vent, but they never got rid of the stupid slanted drip plate with the little water pan hanging from it. The only way the Gen #2 can be right would be to change things in the bottom, starting with ripping out the slanted Drip plate & putting a Gen #1-like water pan(Foil pan) in place.

I agree, rip out all the stuff in the bottom. Also do you think an elbow chimney pointing up would basically solve the side vent problems?

It should stop the air from blowing back in but I'm not sure if the draft inside is a problem with the side vent. I wouldn't think it would be but I'm just guessing :)

Yes I believe it's a gen 2 model also from your advice. I'm going to pass. Thanks for the help!

That would probably help, but it would be better to close off the side vent & put a vent on top like the Gen #2.5 has. Or just stay away from the Gen #2 all together. It would also help the Gen #1 to move the top vent from the Top right to the top left.
The only one that has no problems is the Gen #2.5, so the best thing to do with the #1 and the #2 would be to make them as close to the Gen #2.5 as possible, inside & out. IMHO

Yeah I agree. For $50 a Gen 2 MES40 wouldn't be bad for experimenting on and adding a PID to it. I put a PID on the one I gave my mother and it works very well. She smokes under an outdoor car port and has no real possibility of the wind blowing into the side hole where she smokes. I just never thought about making the elbow chimney up or drilling a new top vent in it. Hmmm might have to think about that, but she might not want me messing with it since it already does the job as is with the PID and an AMNPS lol.

Depending on how much you might want to tinker with it, rewiring and putting a PID on it would make it a way better functioning unit than what it is... also pulling all those trays and pans and metal from the inside to leave an exposed element would be pretty much a must but its just screws so not hard.

Feel free to think about it because for $50 and $160'ish worth of PID and AMNPS you could have a highly performing electric smoker even if it is a Gen 2.
If none of that sounds appealing at all then definitely pass on it :)

LOL----I have my Gen #2.5 on my front porch---the one I use.
Then I have my Old SS MES40 Gen #1 and that Gen #2 that I tested.
Mrs Bear said "Why don't you sell those 2 Smokers, so we'd have more room in the garage?"

I told her The one is a Gen #2 POS, and it has a loose wire in the controller too, but I'd be ashamed to sell that POS to anybody, even if I didn't know him!!!

She said "What about the other one?"
I said that's my 8 year old SS Gen #1 that worked Great until I got my #2.5, and It still works fine, and if anything happens to my #2.5, that one will take it's place again.

No picture for me either.

I can't see it either. Looks like it something from Facebook. Not sure if non facebook members are blocked, or if it some other browser plugin blocking it.

Hahahahaha prepared like a boyscout!
You can always tell her the Gen2 is also parts (heating element and maybe door) for the other 2 :P

Yup---Forgot to mention that---I told her Door, Latch, top vent, and anything else I might need.
