Found on Marketplace, $50 each. I'm not familiar with either brand, been using MES40 for years.

Thanks.

I had a gas smoker, it was ok in cold weather, grab the other lot easier to control temps and better flavor sometimes lol

I think that's a pretty good deal. I recall seeing some guys talking about the Smoke Hollow and that it's good, but sometimes struggles to hold temp. If you have an MES, I don't think you really need it, so you could just go for the offset.

It's a wood smoker, right? Like wood chunks? Sorry, I've been an electric wood chip smoker from the beginning, but willing to expand my horizons now that my MES is on the fritz.

My MES is down right now. Controller stopped working so I guess I need to do the Auber mod thing. But just saw these and thought a different way of smoking might be cool.

I'd spend 50 on the Joe , the other 50 towards an Auber for your MES .

I know you've heard it before , but adding the Auber to your 40 will make it an awesome smoker .
People don't realize that until they do it . Myself included .

MB acquired Smoke Hollow several yrs ago and parts are available. I had one and it worked well with no issues.
I added a pan and charcoal/chunks for flavor. I would definitely get the Joe!

C'mon over the the PID side!!!
The $50 you save and spend on a PID controller and doing the MES rewire would be a great investment, plus you add a "D" to the end of your name here and you become the pid guy!!! :D

As you can tell I am biased but there is plenty of evidence as to why I I'm on big on rewired MES with PID controllers :D

LOL! I have a feeling I will come over to the PID side. I waited too long and they got sold. Must be a sign.

Here I'll help enable you :P

Nothing is more set and forget than a PID run electric smoker. Get a reliable 4 probe wireless thermometer with high and low alarms, do the AMNPS + mailbox mod setup, and you can smoke just about anything in a hassle free manner!

I live in brisket country and about 2 times a month get $0.87-$1/lb pork butt sales. So those things get smoked overnight while I'm sleeping and I only go check on it when the alarms tell me it's time to check for tenderness or the alarms indicate a pellet flame up has occured.

Imagine putting in a nice whole packer brisket or 2 at like 10pm, go to bed, and then about 10am-12pm the next day the thermometer tells you to pull it out. Then eat dinner at 5pm with amazing smoked bbq!!!! :D

You're selling me quickly!

I try to tell people this ,,,
Don't look at it like you're spending money on a smoker you're tired of .
It can be used on different things , like crock pots and hot plates . Some can control fridge temps .
I promise you that once it's installed and set up , that MES will be a favorite option .
I trimmed up a pork butt 2 weeks ago . Saved 2 8oz. hunks to cure for bacon . I hung them this morning at 6 am . Forgot about it until I saw this thread .
MES and the Auber doing it's thing .

Like others already suggested, I'd definitely recommend the OK Joe offset for that price. The gasser, I did one of those years ago and didn't care for it much. Always fought to keep the temps down, and the smoke tray that held wood chips, the chips would just burn up in 2 minutes, so I was always fighting it to keep smoke rolling in it.

The OK Joe is a wood smoker...but IMO it won't perform it's best by using wood chunks. Like all stick burners, it performs it's best on a log split fire - smaller version of what you build in your fireplace. Start with a good hot bed of chunk charcoal, then add a couple splits at a time as often as needed to maintain a good, hot coalbed.

I'd grab the Joe for that price for sure. Maybe find a used 40 on FB? The decision to go Auber is mostly determined but what you're running. If sausage/cured stuff like hams, Auber FOR SURE. If not, PID not so critical. In fact, if no sausage/cured stuff I'd tell you get a used Smokefire on FB. You're pretty close to me and there's 3 on there now that I bet I could score for $250/300. Better smoke profile for stuff like butts/briskets.

I am not even paying attention to the smoker and the Auber runs likes this. Smokefire slays brisky.
