Is $1 a lb for ribs a steal?

My buddy works for a grocery distributor and he said he can get me a case of frozen ribs for around $35. He said it was around a $1 a lb I don't remember how much a single rack of ribs weighs but if I remember right he said it would be around 30 racks of ribs for $35 dollars. That seems like a HUGE steal to me. I think I might have to order several cases from him. Anyone know how many rib racks are suppose to come in a case????

Oh don't worry about my concience its fine. I plan on filling the freezer except my freezer is already full. Oh crap! Good thing I live up North and I have a walk in freezer right now. (my garage) so I can throw lots of them out there. I need to find out what kind of ribs they are first but no matter what I am going to get a case or 12 for that price you can't go wrong. I can make them taste good one way or another. hahaha

Depends what each rack weighs. Quality bbb are graded by the weight of the rack. 1 3/4 down 1 1/2 down etc. The bigger the cheaper. Sounds a little fishy, maybe they are Danish ribs? The ribs I used at the restaurant if I remember there were about 17 to a 30' case.

I would try some before I stocked up unless you want to make a lot of soup.

In the wise words of Ron I think I will get a case and see what they are like before I fill the garage. hahaha. I am waiting to hear from him to see what kind of ribs they are. The reason they are so cheap is he will buy him from his company at his discount rate so he gets them cheap! He was telling me how cheap he can get stuff. Its crazy to hear about how much meat is marked up! I guess that goes for everything now days.

I'm with Ronp on this. I'd pursue it after checking it out.
I bought a boat load once of spares. All good I thought! They were the thinniest ribs I'd ever seen. DANISH. I saw it on the box but didn't know that was Latin for thin and wrong. Now I still have three 10 lb cases in the freezer. I'll have them at the next Boy Scout feed. But I hate serving them.

all depends, if they are spares, thats not that incredible of a price, I can get freah spares for $1.29 every day. If that is a price for BB's thats a really good price. I really dont like buying frozen pork though.

If they are enhanced(injected with salt and crap), not worth it at all imho.

Ok you guys were right again!!! It seemed to good to be true. I just texted him and now he said it around $2 something a lb for a case. Still not to bad depending on what they are. I will get one case and try it from there.

$0.99 a pound is about as cheap as we can get them unless we order them directly from the packing house in the OK panhandle. I don't mind buying frozen pork. The only chance one has at buying fresh (not frozen) anything is from a local butcher. Most of the cases we buy range from 32-38 lbs. each.

I buy a lot of my loins seasonally. At Thanksgiving (and sometimes at Easter) the grocery wholesalers will be dumping inventory to make room in their freezers for either turkeys or hams. For the last three years we've been able to purchase whole boneless loins for $0.99 per pound. I hope that trend continues.

if you have the cash for a case try it.
A close friend of mine works for one of the 2 biggest restaurant supply houses in the midwest and I have been shocked in a good way at the quality of what he can get me if I am willing to buy in cases. so far shrimp, brisket, king crab, all have been top notch for the price of the on sale doo doo stuff at the local store.
Will call him Monday about ribs, for some reason haven't asked him about that yet!

If it was me I would try a case... I am always willing to gamble on something... If they are not what you want, then debone them and make sausage...

I would also take a look at them and if they looked good and meaty I would fill the freezer. I do when I can get a good price I can fill a freezer. Heck I have a freezer just for pork this and pork that.

Speaking of buying Pork... A store where I shop at about 2 weeks ago ran Boston Butts on sale for 67cents per lb... I bought 110lbs... Put it in the freezer...

How ever Ron is right, a Danish rib is smaller but has less meat and some I have gotten are 'enhanced'.
They will be O.K., but a good spare is better.You get what you pay for...

Well my buddy called today and said he can get me a 30lb case of ribs for $31.50. I asked what kind of ribs they were and he said sow loinback. So I am not sure what he means by that. I am going to get a case and try them out. For $1 a lb I have to give them a try hopefully they are good and I can fill the freezer with them.
