Do you wish you could have an iPhone application which would allow you to calculate how much ingredients (cure #1, salt, etc) you need for your receipe based on meat weight? I know, I would use one, but what do you think? Or maybe you know such an app?

I don't know if there are any. I just had an idea. I use a spreadsheet right now for this. But an app would be much nicer.

Are you a developer?

Volume measurements could make it tough to get right. A cup of table salt and a cup of kosher salt are very different.

yes, i do some android development. currently developing a home brewing app in my spare time. wouldnt be too hard to create one for my friends here that had some calculations built in. Tell you the truth I didn't even know there were those type of calculations. I just usually get a recipe and just use it, but then again I don't consider myself a very good cook, though my Q does turn out very good. I don't have much of an imagination. but as i get into this, it does seem to come.

Is your spreadsheet used by a lot of people in the community? If enough people here think it would help them, i could create a least a down and dirty app.

Interesting ideas.............

The problem, I ran into when I started to make sausages and curing meats, that I need to recalculate the amount of spices based on meat weight, especially when I make sausages. For example, if the original recipe is for 1 kg of meat, what if I have 5.3 kg of meat, how much salt, cure and spices I have to add. It is not a difficult to multiply the numbers, but it is much easier to enter meat weight and see actual numbers without doing all the math. Some times the recipe is for 5 kg of meat. Then it makes it even harder to recalculate it.

I didn't share my spreadsheet with anybody yet.

Ah, ok, that makes sense. it would be pretty easy to make, would have to put a bit of thought in to make it look right. have something like:

     Meat

original { } actual { }

Ingredients:

    Original   New

Salt: { }      { }   <-- have it where you can pick your ingredients and then add the amount

So would the app you are proposing allow other users to inventory their own mixtures so they can scale them up or down as well?

Yes, I had that in mind.

I am looking in interest from the community in such tool. If there is enough interest I can start building an app.

Re javascript: It is better to do it in Excel (PC)/Numbers (Mac).

I may share my spreadsheet to show as an example.
