My first post to introduce myself.
Live in Minneapolis, MN metro area. Just the two of us to feed most of the time so I can't do as much smoking and cooking as I would like. The dog would love to help but I know better.
I had a Masterbuilt electric smoker for about 2yrs but it died.
My current smoker is an electric Smokin-it model 1. I should have gone with a model 2 for slightly larger inside. I like to put a pan in there to catch drippings to make for less cleanup. I use cast iron since you can't tell it has been smoked. But my pans don't fit so well. Otherwise I have been very happy with it. The inside is easy to clean.
It runs at a consistent temp. And since it is insulated doesn't need so much electricity.
Seals well so wood goes a long way, don't have to refill it.
Since I have a large pile of unfinished red oak flooring left from remodeling I use mostly that. All those little offcuts and ugly pieces have gone to good use. I have some other wood, scraps from woodworking projects (hickory, maple) to use also. Sister had a black cherry tree taken down so have some of that drying.
I'm also giving sausage making a try so we can have more of a variety of kinds as well as trying to cut the sodium and fat compared to commercial. Sweetie has some health issues that make this important.
I've been lurking for a while and appreciate the information as welll as the friendliness and cooperation of the group.
