I had a pretty interesting past weekend. First, after we got home from our little road trip to the Dakotas and Minn. we discovered that one of our deep freezes had gone out. We had 7 in. of snow here the day before we left, so I'm guessing a brown out condition toasted the compressor, although the repairman said it had leaked, and lost the refrigerant. Its a pretty new Kenmore, but has a porcelain on steel liner. Might be a smoker in it's future
.
Then Sunday night, while watching the NASA show on Discovery, the across the street neighbors' daughter came pounding on the door, nearly hysterical, saying that someone across the street had gotten shot in the face. They knew I was a nurse and wanted me to help. I (wrongly) assumed it was one of their family members, but when I got to their alley, I realized it was something else. I later discovered the details, but seems a couple of young "men" were playing quickdraw. You can guess the rest. The victim was lying on his side with gsws to his hand, mouth, neck, and chest. He was awake, and talking with some difficulty. I really only maintained his airway and c spine immobilization til the FD medics arrived, then helped them. It was a little unsettling for a bit as no one would tell me where the guns were, or what exactly happened. In retrospect I wouldn't have been so eager to help if I didn't think my neighbor, well known to me, were involved. I was having a time trying to understand how one shot produced so many wounds. Afterwards, I was very angry as this sort of reckless behavior is just more gun control fodder. Anyway, I must have been a sight in my bare feet, splinted arm, and hair all askew from wearing a cap all day.
