Hi all,

Looking for some opinions as to where I am at in my build. A few dimensions are as follows, cook chamber is 15.5 x 17.5 x 24 w/ 4 shelves and fire box area is 15.5 x 20 x 9 w/ coal basket and smoke/heat race way is 1 x 15.5 on each side of cook chamber and a 3.5 diameter exhaust routed a few inches above the smoker. I was looking for your blessing that the dims for the smoke/heat race way at each side of the cook chamber would be good enough to do the job.

Thanks,

Tomcat

I was able to score some ceramicwool insulation from work 1 1/2 inches thick, should be ok.

Got a few build specific questions I need answered. Given the size of my cook chamber of 15.5 x 17.5 x 24 would a heat and smoke raceway/opening of 1 x 15.5 on each side of the cook chamber be adequate?

That sounds good to me.  I have seen some with a piece of flat stock mounted about 3" above the opening.  This is angled downward so that the grease runs down the side and drips into a water pan.  This will prevent pit fires from the grease running straight down into the firebox area.
