So I was looking at the smoker I am making, trying to figure out what I could build to stop the cooking chamber door from falling all the way back when opened, without knocking off paint over time, here is my idea,

using the hinge pictured, dissasemble hinge, cut a groove about a 1/4 inch wide through the barrel side of the hinge on top, resert the pin into the barrel, you can now see the pin from the other part of the hinge, open the door to where you want it to stop, then mark a point through the grove you cut onto the pin up against the top portion of the groove you cut.

then drill and tap a 3/16th hole in the pin,

reinsert the pin in the barrel and screw a small screw into the pin then cut off the screw even with the top of the barrel.

The screw will work as a stop against the upper part of the barrel. yes? no?

Hi Shasta, seems to me like it should work.

But that stop pin is mighty small, you would

have to be very careful not to let the door hit on it much.

Might be better to use a strap of some kind on it.

Well I kept running this idea through my head, and it seemed solid, so I gave it a try, IT WORKS LIKE A CHAMP!

while it might not be the best for a heavy lid, my smoker is a mini using a 40 pound propane tank so I think it will be fine.

I used a grade 8 hex head screw and cut it off. and due to the design the force against it will be low right where it screws into the pin

so I dont think it is capable of shearing it off.
