I'm shooting from the hip a bit here, but, don't they use liquid CA in a spray bottle to cover meat in the field in areas that may take time to get an animal properly handled? I think hunters use this stuff in Alaska, and I'm sure other parts, when they are in the backcountry to help preserve the meat for a longer time. From what I understand, they would quarter and hang the meat, then spray a good amount of CA on it to give it a "crust". Dunno, probably something I saw on the history channel 10 years ago and I have it all wrong now.
