Hey all,

I’m planning a BBQ for next week and will need 3-4 Boston Butts. Anyone out there feel that’s too much for the Highland?

What about ribs and chicken? Feel free to share how far you’ve pushed the highland and how it turned out.

Thanks!

Nah... you'll be fine. Just give yourself plenty of time and charcoal and/or wood. I just posted that I fit 4 racks of beef ribs on OK Joe no prob.. for being a big box store smoker, I really grown to like this thing. Just my .02

The Highland is a good sized smoker, so 4 butts should fit with no problem. Unless you have tuning plates installed, I would keep them near the last half of the chamber and rotate them a couple of times so each cooks evenly. I have done 4 racks of baby backs in mine, but any more would require a rib rack. I bought mine because it holds more then the New Braunfels in my avatar, but rarely use it. The New Braunfels holds more than enough for the two of us and is much easier to manage the fire even though I have modded the OK Joe.

I just did a rack of ribs, a pork loin tip, a spatchcock chicken, rib trimmings, & 6 sausages & still had room for more but I built a shelf out of old BBQ grates that sits about 4 inches above the regular grate & that worked out great
Good luck

Awesome! Thanks for the input. I’m using the reverse flow Hughland so I’ll see if I can comfortably squeeze a St. Louis rack in with the butts.

How did you set up the grate so it sits above the bottoms one?

Ribs & chicken take up a lot of space. You could do your butts and when they are done and resting you could smoke some chicken- only appox 2 hour smoke.

I had grates from an old grill that I had a friend cut & weld together for me, I wanted to see how they would work before I have a stronger shelf made for me, but so far it has worked well, it gives me more cooking space & different temp zones from top & bottom

I cooked two butts and three racks of baby backs last Sunday. I filled the entire cooking space with 15 pounds of thighs and drumsticks last Friday. You can put a lot of food in there if you want to.
