I dont know how relaxing it is for me, because I still worry about doing it "right", or at least making something edible.... I wouldn't trade the anticipation, anxiety, consternation for anything... I absolutely love doing it!!!!
It comes with more cooks.  After a while you learn your pit, what to expect, what you like, and it becomes more natural.

Oh...and there's no such thing as doing it "right".  "Right" is what works for you not someone else telling you you're doing it wrong.  Half of em don't know the difference anyway.  Making BBQ you and your family/friends enjoy is "right".

I love researching smoking methods and rubs during the week, prepping meat on Friday, and smoking all Saturday! Who knew that obsessing over temps and fiddling with seasonings could be so much fun!

 Behold the the "smoker":
He riseth early in the am and,
And disturbeth the whole household.
Mighty are his preparations.
He goes forth full of hope,
And when the day is far spent He returns.Smelling of strong drink (smoke) and theTruth is not in him. Love it, live it, eat it!

It will come in time....

I used to sweat keeping my temps within (+) (-) 5°

It was really taking away from the enjoyment of the cook, then I started experimenting ... bumping the temps up to 300 degrees, letting them fall to 200 degrees and the end result was always satisfactory. At that point I widened my temp rang dramatically and have been doing so ever since.... much more relaxed, hell sometimes I load up the pit pop on the maveric and take a jacuzzi tub for an hour lol.

Plus you start to get a feel of what the food should be at a given time, like inserting a probe into a butt, how does it feel? restrictive or like butter, picking those ribs up with a pair of tongues, how does the bend look etc...

LOL! My wife loves it when I come in with a smoky shirt... That might be because she doesn't have to cook that day :)

There has been talk of bottling it for sale as cologne, or maybe an air freshening flavor. I would much rather have cherry pecan smoke than summer showers.
My buddy always gets a bunch of BS from his wife when he comes over I feel for the guy!

Started smoking just after getting my fathers day gift. Wish I had done this years ago. The most relaxing and satisfying experience I've done. Oh and since June, I have close to 20 smokes under my belt. I got hooked quick.
