One of my smokers is a small Mustang Electric smoker. There isn't any place for dripping to go other than down onto the bottom floor. We have permanent square drip markings on our front porch from the liquid leaking out of the smoker. This past weekend we had a grease fire in the thing.

My question, how does everyone control or get rid of grease dripping in their smoker. I know some of the bigger ones have a valve like opening at the bottom, but this is just a little square box that sits on the floor.

There isn't a place for a water pan, which would catch some of the drippings...so I'm just wondering other people's methods...

Sounds sarcastic, but my first response was: a big a$$ fire! That'll clean it out every time. However, since it's electric that might be a problem. I'm not familiar with this smoker, but can you remove the element? If so, the car wash process would probably work.

Long term, what's on the bottom side? Can you cut a small hole for draining? If not, you could even put a small hole on the side and mount a metal pipe fitting flush with the bottom, for drainage.

I just suck it up with a straw.

Shell -

I just mop it up with paper towels after every smoke. Sometimes that stuff hides too! Grease fires are not good!

As for the greese on the porch - try cuttig a piece of plywood and sticking it under the smoker. I use to use sand or kitty litter but that got to expensive and confused my kitties.

Shell, what Debi said... just mop it up after each use. Let me add this... go to Pep Boys and buy an automotive drip pan, the kind meant to protect the garage floor when you have a snotty, dripping car parked in it. That should do the trick for you, but it will have to be cleaned out every once in awhile...

My waterpan catches about 75% of it. The rest I sop up with paper towels. Every once in a while I go at the whole smoker -- a GOSM gasser -- with a pail of Joy and water, a big brush, and the hose. Don't know if that would work with your electric, but that's my story...

Thanks for the replies...BTW...fire is a quick way to get rid of the grease! I'm sure I lost some insulation with how hot that thing got...We had green flames shooting out of my poor little smoker! Thank God it started BEFORE I put the salmon in! IN my gasser, the water pan takes care of most of the grease, but there isn't anything in the electric one, just a little hood over the burner/wood plate.
