Hey all, I am always curious on what we do to afford our hobbies. So, thought I’d start this if anyone would like to add what they do for work.

I will start. I worked for just shy of 19 years at the local cable company doing anything from installation, troubleshooting, trench and locate work.

In April of 2019 was hired on at the Naval Reactors Facility. We support the Navy in Spent Fuel processing from the Navy Aircraft Carriers and Submarines . I am currently a Maintenance Laborer… it’s a fun job and enjoy the variety of work day to day.

Any of you care to share what you do?

Retired and thankful for it!

Before that spent my career in healthcare doing lab testing and managing medical labs. Last one was infectious diseases, thru COVID. But any and all infectious diseases. Very interesting for sure. But the 24/7 365 nature of it gets old. But it got me to retirement so it was worth it.

Farm with my dad who is 89, rent some of the ground from him. Custom feed 4,000 head of hogs... for 27 years now. Use the manure from them for fertilizer on our fields. Sometimes it amazes me... I have raised and loaded 270,000 hogs in the last 27 years ! Been a few other jobs along the way... hanging rain gutters, soffit jobs. Plumbing and heating installer. Rural delivery mail carrier for USPS part time substitute.

Used to be the kitchen supervisor for a family owned restaurant, but since then moved on to be a judicial clerk for our state judiciary's fiscal office.

I miss the faster pace of working in the kitchen, and the tips we got were nice. But this office job gives me more time to que/smoke so I can't complain!

Most of us farmers couldn't make ends meet as a career, so we do it part time to maybe make a little extra (usually not), and because we enjoy what we do!

Hats off to Ryan Brokenhandle Brokenhandle and others who make their living as farmers.

Part time gig. Pay is low, and I don't get many hours but it all adds up and when there is a good sale I stock up. If I walk into a store and there's 80 bucks worth of clearance bellies in the case, my part time gig allows me to scoop them all up without me feeling like I've gone over budget that week. It's also how I buy ammo and the occasional new thing that uses ammo, stuff like that.

I worked for 27 years in the paper industry for International Paper on the white paper side...fine white paper or uncoated free sheet as it's known in the industry. Been retired for just over 8 years...

Edit to add that I spent about 14 years cutting meat for Winn Dixie before the paper industry...

Started working on dairy farms. Moved to short order cook at the old K-Mart restaurants... then Pizza Hut... a little landscaping then 21 years in the U.S. ARMY. 2 years with a large Police Department (2500+ officers) in Special Operations and Special Investigations... the joined the Dept. Of the Army as a civilian... 3 more years until a 2nd 20 year pension unless DOGE gets me!!!!

how do I afford it????
I never joke about that , because I never think about it . Now we know what you think about .

Part time gig.
Amen , and good on you . When I was working , I never took out of house money to buy my toys . Always from side jobs .
Retired as a Carpenter , but before that , Auto mechanic , and before that HVAC and appliance repair . So it helps if you can fix your own stuff .

Wake up , go to work , don't complain . Do it right and the day comes when you look out the window in your fuzzy slippers with no worries .
