It's time to build a bigger horizontal SFB pit and put it on wheels. A 150-200 gallon propane tank would be ideal, but they are hard to come by out here, cheaply anyway. So my next idea is a double barrel drum smoker. Not a top and bottom type, rather cut one end out of each barrel, weld them together for a total size of about 68" x 23". Cut lengthwise in half, frame around the cuts with angle iron to give support and a flat sealing surface between the top and bottom halves. In theory, if i found later I needed insulation I could split some more barrels and add to the outside of each half, with insulation inbetween. I'm not good at drawing pictures, so you will have to look in my left ear to see what I have in mind. Part of me wants a single lid to make the build easier and give the ability to get a whole hog on should i choose. The other part says make 2 separate doors so there is not as much heat loss when you open up. I am not worried about the weight of a single door as I can go Gas assist to help, or if I get really fancy, linear actuators. I have ran the numbers through a couple of calculators so I am good there. With this big of a thin drum, should I go reverse flow to help get consistent temps across? Will I hurt myself if I overbuild the FB and opening in case I decide to add a vertical box in the future for more capacity? Thoughts, Ideas, donations, advice?
