This recipe for Turkey Burgers was adapted from a Mayo Clinic recipe for healthy eating. Their recipe included the tidbit that substituting ground turkey breast for ground beef sheds about 200 calories, 7 grams of fat, and 4 grams of saturated fat. By no means am I knocking beef, but I’m not the kinda guy who needs to be tricked into eating a turkey burger—I’ve had my share of them being a Californian, and these ones are good! Here’s how:

Serves 4:

1 1/4 pound ground turkey breast

1 egg (whites only)

1/4 cup dried bread crumbs
1/4 cup chopped onion
2-3 cloves chopped garlic

2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
2 tablespoons worcestershire sauce

1/2 teaspoon tabasco sauce

1/4 teaspoon coarse black pepper

After I make the patties I coat them with olive oil on both sides and throw them on the BBQ. The folks at the Mayo Clinic didn’t advise stuffing them with Gouda, but they weren’t hickory smoking theirs either . . .  Even if you’re stuffing with cheese these are healthy eating. I recommend stuffing with Gouda.

Here's things gettin started.

After 20 mins of smoke I flip the burgers.

After another 20 mins of smoke I move over the coals.

Then flip...

Here's the burgers with the fixings.

My plate, yum.

If you're wondering why I cooked 3, it's because someone who came over for dinner requested theirs non-smoky (weird huh?) so I finished theirs over the coals with no smoke. It was good too, I guess.

Whether you just want a turkey burger, or if you are counting calories, either way this recipe is a winner. I could have used some avocado though . . .

I'm not one to go for a burger that is not Beef but your's looks pretty darn tasty!...JJ

Thanks for looking, you guys know what kind of spices you like, but I really recommend giving turkey burgers a try with the egg whites, bread crumbs, and a little vegetable matter to make a sorta meatloaf style patty, and the worcestershire sauce seems to make up for turkey's lack of meat juices. With that recipe and and a coating of olive oil these patties behave well on the grill. When you smoke them you get a nice burger color that probably helps with some placebo-beef taste too! MMMMM.
