A while back I came up with a rub for pork. The recipe includes hickory smoke salt and mesquite seasoning. I really like the rub, but when I came up with it, I didn't have a smoker, only a crock pot. The hickory and mesquite helped give it some smoke flavor. Now that I have a smoker I am wondering if I should still add these or if I just use a bit or regular salt and actually smoke the meat, would this be about the same outcome or would it be best not to alter the recipe?

Rubs and smoke flavors are all so much of a personal taste thing I would suggest trying it without the added smoke flavorings and go with the real smoke flavor and see what you think then you'll know whether to add it or not to suit your tastes

You can always smoke your own salt and try the rub with that

Smoking salt is easy and rewarding

The original blend didn't have salt, but I think I will add some and leave out the other. If it isn't to my liking, I can always go back to the original recipe. Thanks guys.

Be sure to write down any changes and amounts of anything used that way you can go back and look to see what you did and adjust things until you get it exactly the way you want it

I always write down my creations, both good and bad. This way I can duplicate it or alter parts if need be.
