Hey fellow Grill masters!

Got a great deal on a BigHorn at Dick's Sporting Goods. Seems to be identical to the Pit Boss, paid $140 on clearance which I thought was a steal. Been using it since January and love it! No issues at all with the grill though I must say it seems to take nearly an hour longer to cook everything than most recipes call for.
I use an iGrill wireless probe/thermometer which appears to be accurate. The digital temp setting and the lid thermometer also seem to be in sync. Been thinking about making a welding blanket jacket and perhaps adding a couple of firebricks to better retain heat. Should be especially useful as it gets windier and colder. Any ideas or experiences are more than welcome! Happy smoking!

my guess is that the metal is probably quite a bit thinner than the pitboss which is why your having so much heat loss, a welding blanket wouldn't hurt, but maybe some of the pro's will jump in. either way it sounds like your making some good food just taking a little longer. did you actually test your thermometer in boiling water just to rule that out.

i fully admit that i have no experience cooking on a large fire pit. From what i have seen most people pile a lot of the coals in part of the grill and a few in a smaller part to put the almost don or done warm, i have a feeling you know this already.
Of coarse putting the bricks there may serve the same purpose as they will retain a lot of heat.
