had trouble keeping a steady temp, even with the extra fire burning. anybody have any advice for me?
 
I'm in the dark, please give more explaination.

Do you have something in there to raise the coals from the floor of the ECB? If you can make something like a expended metal box you can keep the ash off, get plenty of air and the fire will be hotter.
 
also what are you using for heat......charcoal(kingsford etc..) wood, or Lump coal and what brand are you using? i only use royal oak natural lump and works good for me i tried kingsford lump coal one time and temps were all over the place will never use that again!!
