Hi All,

I am looking for a good pair of mitts that will protect my hands when I'm pulling out the coal basket full of lit coals.

I've bought 2 pair so far and I've burned myself doing this exact task with each pair.

Any suggestions?

I think what you need aren't typical BBQ gloves. Get some leather welders gloves for handling stuff like that.

BBQ gloves you would handle food with are typically made out of Silicone.

Also, perhaps come up with some t-handle hooks to grab your hot charcoal basket.

Here is what i use...

They aren't expensive and they can handle about 5-10 seconds of lit charcoals. (480F)

Hope this Helps,

Thanks.  It's crazy.  The last ones I bought said they were good to 900 degrees.  I don't believe them and I have the blister to prove it.

I've been using thick padded leather welder's gloves from Home Depot with no problems.  Any material is only going to slow the heat transfer through the glove for just so long.  I can use mine to grab and shake the fire ring on my WSM (ring is wired to 2 grates) with no issues.  That should roughly equate to what you are talking about in your smoker.

I have a pair of long welders gloves from Northern Tool. They are good for handling wood or the doors, but I'm not sure about a basket. I don't usually handle mine during a cook. As far as meat, I have fleece lined green silicon gloves from amazon that are NSF approved. I have heard some bad news about the orange silicon mitts and I'm not sure, but it sounds like they don't have individual fingers. I have been using my green ones several years and I really like them.

actually, not to bad, I'm a firefighter.  If you check with your local fire dept, they may have some throw aways you might be able to get.  It would work for what your doing but not good for firefighting.
