Hello from Long Beach

Hello all! New to smoking (not to eating it) and don't even own a smoker yet. Looks to be a ton of great information on the site. I'm thinking of starting with a masterbuilt electric smoker with the hope of developing some skills.

Well, crack a beerski and put on the reading glasses... well, if ya need 'em anyway. Start with the 5 day ecourse, and look thru the types of smokers listed on the left of the main screen. When you develop enough knowledge, start asking for clarifications... we LOVE to argue over those!

Welcome to SMF! Glad you're here.

I use a MES and it's pretty easy to run. Most of the electrics don't take as much tending as the wood or gas burners so if that's what you're looking for you've made a good choice. It does have some limitations on temperature though. The thermostat only goes up to 275 so you can't use higher temps which is sometimes recommended for poultry (if you like crispy skin).

Thanks for the warm welcome. I am planning on downloading the course tonight. I am thinking that the electric smokers will be the ticket as I want something I can't mess up too bad, being a newby.

hey all if your electrics have a hard time keeping temp-try a space blanket around them or a water heater cover-or both depending on the temp-works great for me&will bring temp up 40-50*-hope this helps

Welcome, i'm new to the forum but have been grilling and smoking for over 20 years. I noticed your in Long Beach. First things first get yourself a nice little pellet gun BEFORE you get the smoker. After about 1 hour of smoking take out the pellet gun and get ready to defend your meat because once that smell gets going your going to have a few hungry neighbors trying to hop over your fence for sure so be ready for them!!
