Height above burner for MB/Amnps mod?

Wanted to ask for advice before I drill out a 3 inch hole so my MB mod. What distance between the 2600watt burner and the bottom of the hole, or should it be in reference to a heat deflector rack, etc?

Good question.

I am not going to be near my MES but if someone will do the measurement in their MES to see the distance between the element and bottom of hole maybe that will be enough of an educated guess to go with.

The element is approx. 2.5" below the bottom of the hole.

If I put it lower, that would end up bring below a water pan, and or heat shield, etc.... is that a problem? Or should the smoke come in above any shields or water pans?

I also stopped using water pans in my el-cheapo brinkmann barrel.... the steam made everything drip with nasty stuff, so I'm not sure if I will want to use one in this smoker or not yet...
