hardwood pellets

Say some knothead went to lowes for ice melt pellets and grabbed 2 bags of hardwood pellets can they be used in an amazen tray or tube to smoke meat? im thinking they should be ok any suggestions ?

i opened a bag to put on sidewalk thats when i discovered my blunder

I wouldn't use those to cook with. Even though it says hardwood they often contain softwoods as well. Also they don't have many rules about safety that would make them food safe.
