Recently started grinding spices. I bought a cheap coffee grinder which works but the if I want to do items like dried Chiles I have to place them in a mixer first. Also, when I grind, the powder shoots out of the container. What do you guys use to make fine ground powder? Here is some red chile sauce that’s has a combination of ancho, guajillo and nm hatch Chiles I ground. The ancho made it super dark but flavor is great.

We use a cheap coffee bean grinder. Just have to make sure the one you get seals fairly well. Always let it sit and settle for a few minutes after grinding peppers otherwise you'll end up getting a snoot full of very fine powder!

Thanks for the help! Sounds like I’m on the right track with putting in the mixer first and then grinding. I’ll take a look at the grinder recommendations!

If canning sauce, rehydrating the Chile first then blending makes a nice base.

One of the whirling blade coffee grinders works for most things. Usually available at a local thrift store for not much coin. Large quantities of pepper go through a burr coffee grinder, also available at your local thrift store.

Hi there and welcome!

I use my Magic Bullet with the grinder blade. It does a good job for me. No complaints at all :D

I have a Krups also. The one I have has removable chambers. I have a tall one and two short ones. They have plastic lids that go on top during grinding. It keeps the dust inside the chamber. Less messy.

I also use one of the "Magic Bullet" grinders. Found a set on sale for $30'ish that had 4 containers in it. I find more uses for that tool every day it seems.

I have also started mixing my wet and dry sausage ingredients in it like Bill Dumas does (the Sausage Sensei). I just use the bullet as I'm not making huge batches like he does.

What I like most about the magic bullet and grinding peppers (or grinding anything) is that once done grinding you can pull the canister and set it upside down and let it sit for 10 min so all the dust settles in side.
Then it's easy to open and pour out. With chili powder, you don't want to pepper gas yourself with that stuff floating around in the area. This lets you avoid that by just waiting a little bit and then allowing you to easily put a bag over the top or pour into a container with little air space for it to escape into the air and into your eyes/nose lol.

Same here...the thing is a BEAST with the grinding blade!

To anyone who has the Magic Bullet and decides to get the grinding blade, I HIGHLY recommend grabbing an extra cup, though...I ground up a 1/4 cup of peppercorns and not only did it "etch" the inside of the cup, but also seems to have embedded the SMELL of said peppercorns into it as well!

Might not taste so good if you blend a smoothie or something like that in it afterward. :emoji_wink:

In case you're interested . I dried my Cayenne yesterday , and let them sit overnight .
This morning I used the Bullet to grind them .
I clip the stem , but grind the rest . Seeds and all .

I bought these small spice containers a few years ago . They're great for this .
Come with labels and a magnet on the bottom . I stick them on the fridge .
They hold quite a bit .
