Hello all! Anyone buy whole peppercorns and grind them into 16 Mesh? I was looking at adjustable electric coffee grinders, which will probably work. Just wondering if anyone does this, as where I live(Philippines), 16 mesh is not readily available, and whole peppercorns are easy to find and pretty cheap.

If you know of a device that you've used, please let me know what it is!

Thanks!

not sure but following for an answer. roughly how big is 16 mesh?

A spice grinder that has a coarse setting should work fine. Do you have a food processor? That may work as well, but probably not a easy/consistent as spice grinder. Mortar and Pestle will work if you want some exercise.

I have the electric gravity grinder with adjustable particle size. Not sure what my mesh is, but for coarse, I just open it all the way.

Do you get a consistent grind size? If so can you link it or give me the product name?

I got them on Amazon, https://a.co/d/hJ86CIb I wouldn't say it's a consistent grind, but definitely can tell the difference from Coarse to Fine. Not sure how it could get much more consistent though milling your own. I like them, but they don't crank out much volume so coating a whole brisket would take a while. That's really the only downside that I've seen.

I put most of my sausage seasonings in a blade style coffee / spice grinder to get a uniform powder. Mustard seed and fennel seed are the exceptions. I grind about 1/2 the fennel seed and coarse mash the remainder in a baggie with a hammer.
I guess if i want visible pepper than the hammer and baggie to crunch about 20% of the total amount.

If you want large amounts to season a large piece of meat, then search for drill powered pepper mill. I don't have a link saved to post.
Basically they take a traditional pepper mill, remove the top, and chuck up a drill motor to the shaft.

Specifically 16 mesh is:

  • 16 mesh is a medium-sized U.S. Standard mesh size.
  • The nominal opening of 16 mesh is 0.0469 inches (1.18 millimeters).
  • The typical wire diameter of 16 mesh is 0.63 millimeters.
I would imagine there are metal or plastic sieves that will filter for specific sizes.

Let us know where you wind up on this.......
