Without actually seeing the unit itself, it sounds to me as if 1) The power management settings are set to hibernate or standby. This would cause 2) The system to power back up to perform 3AM updates as the system never fully shut down in the first place.
So, either change the power down options or change the time the updates occur. If you don't want auto updates, turn them off in the control panel under "Automatic Updates" or your system will keep dialing home at 3AM or whatever time you set it for.
First thing we need to figure out here is what is causing your pc to wake from sleep. You can do this using the powercfg command.
Open up a command prompt and enter powercfg -lastwake
When I run this I get as my Wake Source Type: Fixed Feature Power Button, because I last woke this laptop up was by using the power button.
Hopefully it will tell you what caused your laptop to wake from sleep and we can get it corrected.
That is odd. I searched a bit and found someone else with the same result and the advice given was that the powercfg command needs to be run closer to when the computer woke up.
So try running that the next time it happens and hopefully it gives some meaningful info.
I spent 7hours with support the first night nothing changed. The next day I ran a system restore from the hard disc partiion again and it may have worked, not sure.
I went to Sam's and the guy in electronics told me to bring it back since I had problems so soon, no telling what may happen in the future.
So I did, and I have a new HP laptop as of tonight. Thank God for Sam's.
