My compaq does this as well . I just down all power to it at night . I will keep reading to see what becomes of it but mine does the same damn thing .

If it is a laptop the battery would need to be removed.

I checked all the settings I could find.

I will do some research and see what I can find out for you...

Without actually seeing the unit itself, it sounds to me as if 1) The power management settings are set to hibernate or standby. This would cause 2) The system to power back up to perform 3AM updates as the system never fully shut down in the first place.

So, either change the power down options or change the time the updates occur. If you don't want auto updates, turn them off in the control panel under "Automatic Updates" or your system will keep dialing home at 3AM or whatever time you set it for.

Let us know if that helps sir.

I have done all that, thanks though.

First thing we need to figure out here is what is causing your pc to wake from sleep. You can do this using the powercfg command.

Open up a command prompt and enter powercfg -lastwake
When I run this I get as my Wake Source Type: Fixed Feature Power Button, because I last woke this laptop up was by using the power button.

Hopefully it will tell you what caused your laptop to wake from sleep and we can get it corrected.

Here is a link to documentation on the powercfg command in case anyone is curious:

General sleep troubleshooting from Microsoft:

Just a guess, but disabling the "Allow wake timers" and the network cards wake on LAN feature as suggested before should fix your problem.

When I did the above I got =0.
Thanks.

That is odd. I searched a bit and found someone else with the same result and the advice given was that the powercfg command needs to be run closer to when the computer woke up.

So try running that the next time it happens and hopefully it gives some meaningful info.

Thanks.
If it is on tommorw AM I will try that again.

No help but it did remind me of this song.

I spent 7hours with support the first night nothing changed. The next day I ran a system restore from the hard disc partiion again and it may have worked, not sure.

I went to Sam's and the guy in electronics told me to bring it back since I had problems so soon, no telling what may happen in the future.

So I did, and I have a new HP laptop as of tonight. Thank God for Sam's.
