Getting TBS

When I first start my homemade trash can smoker and get the wood chunks in there, it makes that horrible "billowing white smoke" for about 20 mins before I get some TBS, is there anyway to stop this?

You didn't mention how many/much wood chunks you put in there, so I might guess that you have a bit too much wood at one time.

i put about 4 good sized chunks with a few of those scrappy small pieces from the same bag....im using hickory btw

Sounds like a draft issue. Make sure you have the right amount of intake and your exhaust is open all the way. These are just assumptions on my part since I'm not sure what type of draft controls you have....
