Did anyone see the news report last night on product contaminants from China? They did a series of products from paints on toys to the materials in the toys themselves. They hit also on equipment in the kitchen and touched on items such as BBQ's. They said many metal products in China are coming from the cheapest steel available and should not be considered food safe as they are often coming from reclaimed steel from cars and buildings that contained lead, asbestos, and/or petroleum products. They said when they remake the steel from that into plate, it's often not food safe but it is not regulated. They did not talk about the levels for the food safe for home and kitchen but when the reporter asked the expert if he would still use those products in his home and he said "ABSOLUTELY NOT!" Be careful gents....Buy American!!!!!! Sorry Traeger and Charbroil....you be contaminated!!

I would be curious too to see the source of this report. If true consequences would be huge.
I am not so sure.....We Americans get upset but only to a point until it hits the pocket book and then things don't seem as bad as they once were. Remember the pink slime thing a few years ago? Well that is now roaring back as Americans no longer care. We want our cheaper burger back.

I think most people care about the quality of the food and of cooking utensils. And that they are willing to pay more to avoid eating contaminants - if proven that's a concern.

People got fed up with "pay more for better quality", or "pay more for organic" when they learned they pay for the story, not for for extra value.

A recent report I read concluded organic vegs/fruits are no better than regular.

My grill, made in Canada, broke three times since I bought it. I paid 2-3x more than I would have for a made in China unit, hoping for reliability. I didn't get my money worth.

But, like I said, if use of non food grade metal in cookware is documented to be widespread watch the tide turn.

This is true....but what do they consider "food grade metal"? I never heard of such a thing until last night. I would have thought the impurities would have boiled out when they remelt and refine it. But what do I know?

I am not a metallurgical engineer. I don't know what the process for "cleaning " reclaimed metals is , but it should be clearly a documented and monitored process. Can't just grab recycled stainless steel and melt it/form it in a pan.

Perhaps they should add a cup of Clorox to every batch. he he

You do realize of course you are talking to a group that cooks on reclaimed propane tanks and oil drums right?
of course.....doesn't mean people should do it though. And I personally would never used a oil drum that had oil in it at one time. Propane is supposed to be a clean fuel! Those I have no problems with. I think any unit that is season'ed well should be good enough....but I am no scientist

The temperature required to smelt steel and cast iron are both way over 2,000* F. If you saw some of the stuff that goes into the smelters used to produce the finest cast iron cookware money can buy, you'd understand why this is all a bunch of malarkey. Nothing toxic is going to remain at those temperatures.

Again......don't know....Do not know any of the info. Only what they were saying. I tried to find it on the web but don't know if they re-produce stuff like that. But I can tell you it was in between the Trump phone tapping and Obamacare repeal and the Snow storm back east.
