Just saw 2 episodes of this on YouTube.

"Celebrities" are interviewed while eating hot wings, starting with sauces of a low Scoville rating, increasing the level for each wing.

I don't get it.

I enjoy peppers and sauces for the flavor.

Why do so many feel the hotter the pepper they eat, the "tougher" they are?

I think that is an over simplified and in several cases, incorrect statement.

There's a whole bunch of science about eating spicy foods and it's effects on the brain. About how it opens many pleasure centers of the brain and so forth.

It's either something that appeals to you or it's not. It doesn't make the other side wrong, or ignorant as your statement implies.

I'll check it out - thanks for the pointer!

When I was younger I could tolerate MUCH hotter food. Partly age methinks, and partly having gotten away from hot food 'regularly' has greatly reduced my interest. Note - not eliminated, I still love some spicy food!

It was usually a LOT of beer that made me not necessarily "tough" , but stupid when I was younger!

It's actually said that the oldest generation of citizens in the United States are who are driving up overall hot sauce sales. Something to do with the declining number of taste buds as a result of aging.

I agree here too .I've read up on some of this years ago . Something about after a certain level of heat it becomes " enjoyable "
There are people out there that think it's impressive to eat the hottest pepper they can find , just to eat it . Turns into stupidity fast .

That‘s pretty much exactly here too. I used to make my chili so hot it made me cry, but loved it. Although I could still do it, I just don’t enjoy it that way any more. I think valving back the heat allows one to discern and enjoy more subtle flavors.
Tastes - literally and figuratively - tend to change.

How about brand names like "Not for Wimps Hot Sauce", "You cant handle this"?

Watch some youtube videos for example if you'd like.

Don't put words in my mouth. Never implied the "other side was " was wrong, or ignorant.

I have to agree so hot you can't taste what you have seasoned with them just don't make sense to me and I do like hot.
My trouble is the tummy doesn't like it anymore and the ice-cream gives me reflux.

I agree . I got some reaper powder from Tropics . Once I figured out how much to use ( and it's not very much ) ,,, it has fantastic flavor . Almost fruity . If it's so hot you cant taste it why eat it .

Ghost Peppers were plenty flavorful and hot for me. I tried them dehydrated and ground.

No stomach or reflux issues, but absolutely agree with your overall statement.

Ok, after reading this last night, I went to Youtube and watched the Gordon Ramsay episode, hilarious! Then I watched the one with Alton Brown (who is a good ol' boy from Georgia), and it was an interesting contrast. Where Ramsay, in a tee shirt, was screaming and dying from the wings, Alton was seated in a tie and jacket, calmly remarking on the various flavors and heat levels of the sauces. He didn't even break a sweat. I've always liked Brown, but my respect for him went up a few notches after watching that.

I watched one with Will Ferrell and the one with Guy Fieri.

Have to check out the ones you mentioned.

You really don't have to be "tough" to eat HOT wings.

Some people just enjoy them that way.

John
Yup. Exactly.

That's why I settle on a flavor and heat balance that suits me.

What suits me may not suit you.

Forget about all of the "No wimps allowed/you can't handle this" stuff that is used in branding and advertising you might encounter.

Thanks Bill ace 350 for the like it is greatly appreciated.
There is a story behind the ice cream you eat it first then the next morning you cry come on ice cream,

One of my first jobs was doing a water treatment plant upgrade for a small town just outside Buffalo. One of the commissioners owned a bar, and we would close it with them after board meetings. (Those were the days).
Anyway, of course they served wings, and we would tell Phil to make them hot ... then complain not hot enough .. and keep that up until he said he just couldn’t make them any hotter. Of course, we were dying, but not going to tell him that!
