First build

So I am attempting to build my first cinder block smoker. I'm trying to build it as inexpensive as possible. My next step is building the firebox. I have seen several lined with firebrick but those are kind of expensive. My question is if I'm able to get my hands on some solid core red bricks would those work just as well? Thanks
