Firebox sizes

Why is it that on almost every build I have read about on here the fireboxes are way bigger then the ones manufactures build? It seems common for the DIY guys to go 30" x 24" x 30" on a 250 build but manufacturer's just use 24" x 24" x 24".

The manufacturer wants no waste on his 4' x 8' plate. The home builder does not care about wasted drops!

And , more importantly, We are Cooks! And know the more room that fire has to breath, the cleaner it will burn.

A lot of the manufactures lean toward the charcoal cook as we'll, not many really design it for burning logs.
