In the Colorado mountains
We moved up to CO last summer and brought our lovely German Shepard, who goes by the name of Gator, along with us.  Well, we sure weren't going to leave her behind!

Now, she was born up here but spent only her puppy youth during her first winter at a bit of a lower elevation east of Colorado Springs with not quite as much snow as we get up here west of the Springs at 9100 feet in elevation.  I know she has experienced snow in that first year of her life but when we brought her down to the Gulf Coast she didn't see any snow.

So, now that she is back in the snow for the first time in eleven years I've been a bit perplexed in her behavior.  She absolutely loves the stuff as she is constantly biting and snorting the stuff.  Tony Montana has nothing on her near the end of his life as when she is outside her nose is always completely covered in the white stuff.  However, when we have more than about 8" on the ground she doesn't like to venture to far out.

At first, I attributed this to her age and how her hind end has been giving her some problems of late.  Any time we get a decent amount of snow I'll shovel around the car so we don't have to worry about the snow getting in my wife's shoes (she refuses to wear boots).  Normally, Gator will wander off a ways to do her business but when we have a bit of snow on the ground she tends to do her business right around the car where I have shoveled.

Its not that she really doesn't like walking in the deeper stuff, as she has no problem when we go on our walks.  I stay on the drive and she'll wander off to one side or the other.  But I couldn't figure out why she had to do her business in the immediate area around the car.

Until today!  I can't believe I was so inconsiderate of my poor pup this winter and truly feel ashamed.  It seems when we have about 8" or more of the fluffy white stuff on the ground...well...no real nice way to put this...

she tends to have to put her tender parts right down there in that cold stuff to do her business!  I'm thinking of getting one of those weed burners that run off a 20lb propane tank and following her around.  That's how bad I feel!

Glad you figured it out. Blue, a Redbone Coonhound that we recently had to put to sleep flat out refused to go out his last winter. Turns out that the ice on the little ramp leading up to the doggy door freaked him out. Could not find any ice meter and being that it never saw sun sand wouldn't make it melt. Every morning I would go outside and use the weed burner to melt the ice....

Poor girl you should have just left her down here with me we know Gators don't belong in the mountains and snow

Believe me, she loves it up here.  When she saw her first deer, a pretty decent buck, I laughed so hard as she didn't really have a clue how to react.  She paused for a bit, looked back at me and then took off at it.  Sad part is there is no way she could keep up due to her hips, but oh was she excited.  Now when she jumps a rabbit or whatnot she just watches them run off.

And she really does love the snow.  I have to let her out about every 30 minutes just so she can go eat some.  She does prefer to eat the crunch stuff but it is funny to watch her bury her entire head in the soft stuff until she hits the ground.

Oh, and they do have gators up here in the San Luis Valley just north of Alamosa, outside year round.  I don't think they are quite native to the area but they seem to like the hot springs they live in/around!

We don't get much if any snow here in East Texas but our little Schnauzer hates the snow, she walks out and as soon as her foot touches the snow she wants back in.

The only time she has problems with her feet is when the temp is down to 10-15 degrees.  She'll do what she needs to and wants to go wherever I go but it being that cold really hurts her feet.  She doesn't want to go in the house if I'm going to stay out and thinks she's being punished or something.

With her going on 13 years I'm afraid she won't be around too much longer so I baby her.  My wife was getting mad a bit for me doing that but now she does the same thing.  I can't tell you how much elk scraps she's had in that last few months...lol

Hey AJ
My two girls--6 year old black Labs--just love the snow. They have been trained since birth that the yard grass is out of bounds when it's time to go. They have always gone in the "tall grass". They just tramp around an area until the snow is at the right height. If we have a winter with lots of snow all you can see is 2 tails and 4 ears when they're out playing
