To start off I'm from Mississippi and love hot foods and bbq. But my wife and her family are from Indiana and seem to be as Yankee as they come.

What i'm getting at is non of them other than my son like any hot or spicy food. I love Jeffs rub and sauce that I purchased. But its too hot for my family.

So, if anyone has a good sauce anD rub recipe that's not hot please help!

I would imagine that you can make the same rubs and sauces.but leave the hot out..for every offensive thing you take out add that amount in another herb/ spice that they like. maybe dried cilantro. sage /good luck..

Just the regular pepper or the cayenne too? I want it too still have that good flavor. With the sauce I think removing most of the pepper would work. Maybe add a little more brown sugar.

Hi Audio,

I understand your problem. You have to distill it down to the essence first. Does your family prefer "sweet" sauces or just not "hot" sauces?

If they prefer sweet, there is no changing them. Do not try to jazz things up, they love sweet and that's all, so give it to them. Find molasses heavy sauces which abound online and lots from the south.

If they prefer "not hot" then you have something to work with. In time you can accustom them to a variety of flavors, often bold, but not "hot" You can teach them the difference.

If this is the case, then their taste experiences are up to you; go easy on them and they will expand their liking. Good luck!

Fer sauce, we now use basically two, the Mahogany sauce listed as a sticky on the forum and the finishing sauce also as a sticky. Mamma don't like spicy and she like both. As fer a rub, a good commercial rub yall can use is Southern Comfort. Nice taste buy mild.

I am Yankee as they come also and I love hot and spicy foods. People's tastes are different, no matter where they are from.

As Rivet said, ask what they like and give it to them. Over time their preferences may evolve.

There are plenty of decent bottled sauce that you can give a try to see what they like and take it from there.

For rubs, start with something basic like salt, pepper and garlic, and then add or subtract; keep good notes.

Don't feel sick; to each their own, right?

Plenty of good sweet sauces; start with one of those then add a little bit of this one time, a little bit of something else the next.

Or just let them be happy with their sweet sauces, make a batch for them and a spicy one for you.

Cut whatever your smoking in two parts. One for you, one for them. Season each one as you/they like it.

I agree with geob....if you're doing ribs...make a rack just for you...and do the rest for the family. Pork butts?...one smaller one with your taste preference....and another that will suit everyone else. Then offer them some of yours to sample.....just might start to bring their tastes around to a level you all can handle....

or on the other hand ... they'll get use to the heat. I had the same problem with my wife, and now she loves it. She now even makes sure we have tabasco on hand. I have plenty of cayenne and ground chipotle in my rub, and even my 2 year old loves the pulled pork.
The only change I made was buying store bought bbq sauce for them. And everyone is happy now.

Start slow with your intro to spiced up food. If one member likes the spicy or hot more than the others push them to try new things that are hotter little by little. Brag about how cool you think it is they like hot or spicy food. Remember it doesn't have to burn you to have nice taste..The heat level isn't what makes it good. I have my older daughter (7) eating stuff with spice. She is going to be a smoker. Two more to go. God help me.

I just bought a couple butts at my Meat market on sale for 1.39 a lb and boy are they pretty.

I have some famous daves rub I'll use on one and some shoups bbq sauce which is a great local sauce that's not hot.

What Capt Dan said. You don't hasve to compensate for the extraction of any heat element.

What others said... AND one thing I have found... you...and the family...can build up a tolerance to heat in foods. In other words... start slow. I find tastes will adjust as folks become "used" to spicy flavors. My sister in law HATED any heat a few years back. She's chowing bro Marktee's ABT's like no tomarrow now :{)

My wife still complains about the heat.... as she is licking her fingers and tossing a clean rib bone on to the plate.  I don't think that will ever change.  I did what most are saying on the board...  I slowly added heat back to my rub.

Good luck.
