I have looked at the assembly instructions and the inventory of parts for my new Z grill over and just can't find anything out about this part. It looks like a shield for the burner pot so I just placed it around it but I want to make sure I did it right. Also, the grease pan/shield was wrapped in plastic with a film of oil over it. Is that possibly toxic or is it food grade oil they used on it? Should I clean it off with soap and water before firing it up? Or will it cook/burn off? Any input is appreciated.

Looks to me like that box thing with the slit rests on the raised tab above the igniter. As far as the grease goes that is safe and normal and will burn off when you season the smoker

Most pellet grills come with instructions that tell you to do an "initial" cook without any food to burn off the manufacturing oils that remain on most of the parts. It's probably a good practice even if your unit didn't specify it.

Notice by looking at the pics above that no where in the manual did it show the heat baffle in the component list, assembly instructions or in any of the diagrams. Weird. Glad you all knew what it was and where it goes. I though it was to go over the fire pot, and it does, but I had it installed wrong. The video showed me how to properly install it.

I'm guessing the heat baffle box was added later in production. Much easier to update youtube instructions than re-create and print new paper manuals.
Part 18, the grease drain plan, I suspect didn't originally have the "sear" adjustable opening and may have been a considerably thicker metal, making the heat baffle less necessary.
